The game of bowls is one of the oldest ball sports in the world, with references to the game dating back to the 13th Century and the world's oldest surviving bowling green being in Southampton, which was first used in 1299.

Bowls in the 13th century was manifested a lot differently from the bowls that we know today, with iron balls and a small cone used instead of the wooden jack of the modern game. Scoring has remained very similar throughout the ages, with games being decided after a predetermined number of shots per player or for team games, the higher score after a certain number of ends.

The game's modern format is largely believed to be related to the patenting of the lawn mower in 1830 which allowed for the pristine, level bowling greens that we associated with the game today.

This invention led to the creation of bowling greens and fields and led to the general codification of the modern rules as we know them today. Whilst traditionally bowls was played in white clothes - similar to cricket whites - the modern game has seen more colourful clothes being worn in recreational games and competition which we can also customise.
